Harry Carew is a garden and landscape consultant based in the UK.

Harry has an imaginative, nature-sensitive approach to creating gardens and nurturing landscapes. As a trained gardener and somebody who has worked within the Sussex landscape for over a decade, he has a wealth of experience in working with (rather than against) our environment to cultivate spaces that are crafted with an attuned eye, uniting aesthetic charm with ecological conviction.

Whether in the patient curation of a wildflower meadow, a drought-tolerant planting scheme, or a colourful flower garden managed on organic principles, Harry‘s innate sensitivity allows for careful consideration of all aspects pertinent to a site’s evolution. Harry works with landscapes by exploring first their intrinsic qualities and then deepening their sense of identity and purpose through thoughtful refinement.

Harry is a garden maker, food grower, and landscape lover. Originally working as a market gardener on a small-holding in Sussex, Harry moved into ornamental horticulture, arriving at Charleston where he has been Head Gardener since 2020. During this time he has developed his own practice in managing bold, painterly mixed herbaceous borders and has developed areas of mixed grassland and meadow, Mediterranean-style garden, and woodland planting. He is adept at planning for the gardening year and has an intuitive understanding of what is required to create a garden full of all-year round successional interest.

Since 2022, Harry has worked on a number of garden renovation projects across Sussex and Hampshire, thus widening his range of experience and honing his skills as a garden maker and landscape consultant. Harry has a fundamental understanding of soil ecology, plant communities, natural material and sustainable practices.

When not gardening or thinking about plants, Harry likes to walk on the South Downs and explore his local coastline. He is an avid reader and enjoys all forms of art. Harry has an undergraduate degree in History and is a self-taught Spanish speaker having previously lived in Colombia and Spain.
